I read this fascinating profile on the Redwood forest in CA in the October 2009 issue of National Geographic. This pull out photo was one of the most amazing as you can see a number of people interspersed throughout the span of the tree. Awesome! It was also fascinating to find out the composition of the upper (oldest) branches is not just wood, but many other things as well living up there - salamanders, murrelets, canopy soil, chipmunks, hemlocks, etc.
