I read this story tonight about people trying to get out of North Korea to espace the deplorable conditions (people having to eat grass and tree bark, working in labor camps, worshiping Kim Jong Il, etc.). Unlike other refugee populations, 80% of the people trying to escape North Korea are women. Men seem to have an easier time getting jobs and women can be sold to the Chinese or essentially enslaved in the sex industry. Luckily, there are smuggling routes that are mainly run by the churches but they are still fraught with serious danger of being captured at many checkpoints along the way. Scary! Even when they make it to the South, the refugees have a rough go of it with the language difference and discrimination against the people of the North.
