Saving an Indian Language in SOMA

The Ramaytush were American Indians that lived in what is now our SOMA neighborhood. The city has put up brass plaques on the sidewalks in the area commemorating their language and with the hope of preserving it.

75 Years of Men's Underwear

Sweet story in today's Chronicle!

Why do they have to make the guys look so hot in these pictures?! Love the beer and socks look!

It's a Chili Kind of Sunday

There's something to be said for November Sundays, football, and a tub of delicious chili!

Mutations May Protect Against Infection

In this paper, a team of researchers from the NIH describe a potential new mechanism for cellular defense against viruses, bacteria, and oxidative stress that involves mutation of amino acids in proteins to methionines. They hypothesize that the reason is that the methionines protect against cellular damage cause by reactive oxygen species. I wonder why the residues are mutated to only methionine and not cysteine as well. Also, I would like government researchers to be forced to publish in freely available journals. We should not have to pay again just to read their research results - they already get $$ from us to conduct the research!

Anyway, the full paper is here...

Tropisueno and Ozone Thai

We had a great time having some margaritas and appetizers with MH, TZL, and MAM at Tropisueno yesterday afternoon. But, the best part was the Chupa Chups that they brought out to us with the check! I remember first having those delicious little lollipops in Thailand! Afterwards, we trotted over to Nova (worst decision) and then Ozone Thai for some very good Thai food with RN too. I should have gone with my instincts and listened to the Chupa Chups!

Worst Restaurant Experience Ever!

We went in with a group of 7 people to Nova and we looking forward to a great night out. Unfortunately, we found a piece of a latex glove in our mac and cheese appetizer and immediately complained. The initial response was pretty good and they offered to get us a dish and a pretty nice ($70) bottle of wine for free. But, as the feeling of the nastiness set in, all of us decided that we were too grossed out to eat there. So, we told the server and the bartender (the only people working) and their response was unreal. The bartender proceeded to ask us what our problem was since the glove is "sanitary." Um, yeah, it's really sanitary when it's been on someone's hand and then ripped off. I want her to put a sanitary glove in her mouth and tell me how sanitary it tastes. She even proceeded to call the owner and then gave us all this attitude about the situation too. We should have just left, but we actually paid for all of our drinks first (over $100). We live in the neighborhood and used to love going here, but will never be back. Worst restaurant experience ever - if I could give negative stars for service and response to a bad situation, I would.

KL's New Favorite Movie!

Bob the Butler - Starring Tom Green as Bob Tree (aka The Butler) and somehow Brooke Shields got involved in it. I think I'm going to get KL the soundtrack as a holiday "gift" - only if I want to get knocked out by her. Sample verse: My name is Bob, and I need to get a job (repeat 1000 times)...

Homemade Caramel Rolls

KL treated me to a nice little fruit bowl and some sausage links today for breakfast. Then, I took my first stab at making caramel sticky buns with pecan and they actually turned out quite good! But next time, I think I need to use more caramel or less bun!!

Presentation Nightmare

I haven't been in a meeting like this in awhile!! But, I really like the term "donut hole" for people like this woman!

How True!

I don't get how people can go wild for these shopping days. Saving a few bucks is not worth dealing with all the crazies out on Black Friday!

Worst Dad of the Week

Sad, but funny story in today's paper!

Nap Time!

A rough day of cooking and running around chasing their tails tired everyone out! A well deserved rest was on the menu before snuffing our snackholes with lots of pot roast.

Holiday Card

We had a super chill day filled with great food, family, and friends. The gay turkeys came over after their HMB party and brought us a lovely card! Too bad AR messed up his messing up of the names!! Spectabulastic!

Sunrise!

Dance Party USA 2009!

Look out Hunn!

Sunrise Gathering on Alcatraz

I got up super early this morning to go out to Alcatraz for the annual American Indian Sunrise Gathering. I was surprised that there were so many people that were there! It was packed!! But, since I am still a cripple with a severe limp, I got to go to the head of the line! I would rather be able to walk normally, but I have to admit that benefit was quite nice! The weather was great and the skies were super clear too!

The Gobbledy Gooker Turns 20!

We got CC this sweet card and a nice little microphone for him to play with in Reno. He was really drooling when he saw the picture on the card. He and his friends will probably fight over who gets to sing!

Vikings are 9-1!

And Mama Lightning sent me this sweet little singing ball just in time for the game today. And it got a lot of work! Favre had another great game! TZL came over for dinner and to watch the destruction of Kessler by Andre Ward. On Sunday, we had a nice brunch with D and K at Perry's on Embarcadero too!

I hope things don't ever get this bad!

17 Things to Know About Your Cat

Sweet cartoon here...

Turkey Lurkey

This cartoon reminded me of Thanksgiving as a kid with my parents back in MN.

Pyridine Oxidation

I stumbled across this 1997 Biochemistry paper and thought the mechanism of oxidation followed by ring opening was pretty interesting...

Body of Lies

We finally saw this movie last night and thought it was awesome!

Paddleboating on the Bay

I had a great time Friday night on my trip!

Interesting Title for a Play

or anything, really!

Palin Has Problems with Reality

Not only is she apparently running from reality, but puts the blames on everyone else! Sounds like a winner to me!

Why a cat translator probably wouldn't sell...

Hilarious!

Why don't gorillas ride goats?

This was a funny, but insightful question posed by Werner Herzog in his documentary on Antartica "Encounters at the End of the World." He also gets into a conversation with a penguin expert on if they exhibit behavior resembling threesomes or prostitution. The movie wasn't all about penguins and was more focused on the people that live there and their environment. But, one of the indelible images for me was the one penguin that did not head towards open water with the rest of the herd, but instead headed inland toward certain death.

Chocolate

The Willie Wonka movie got me jonesing for some chocolate real bad!

Amp Up!

This drink gives me the shakes! Whoa!

Pacquiao Rocks!

We had a few people over to watch the Pacquiao-Cotto fight and, like the lasagna, it didn't disappoint! I had Manny winning in round 4 or 8, but will take his TKO win in 12. I think Mayweather should probably go back into retirement! I enjoy reading Dan Rafael's boxing column's and recaps, but he predicted Cotto winning in 11. Oh well, his column- just like Pacquiao -still rocks...

Water on the Moon

The satellite that crashed into the moon a few weeks back kicked up about 26 gallons of water. Pack your bags and get ready to colonize the moon!

Coming Home

One of the nice things about coming home after a rough day with the physical therapist is Little Indian and the couch are there waiting for me!

Physical Therapy Begins

My first day of PT was Wednesday. I could barely bend my knee without it feeling like my kneecap was going to pop out again - even with the help of the Percoset. But, I made a little progress and on Friday I could bend it a little more. It feels like it will be a decade before I'm up and running around again!

Tallest Dog in the World

Sweet legs!
