Sioux Uprising of 1862 and Execution

I was reading a story today about the largest mass execution in American history - the hanging of 38 Dakota Sioux in Mankato, MN on December 26, 1862.  Originally, it was supposed to be 303 Indians, but President Lincoln was unsettled by the lack of defense the Indians received and the hastily conducted trials they were given.  So, he commuted the sentences of all but 38 for their role in the Sioux uprising of 1862.
