Chocolate Drinks 1000 Years Ago
On rainy days like today, I like to enjoy a nice glass of hot chocolate and whipped cream. As MH likes to say, it's deeeeeeeeeelicious! So, it was interesting to read that chocolate drinks were enjoyed by the peoples living in the Chaco Canyon in New Mexico 1000 years ago. A team of researchers at UNM found theobromine (a marker chemical known to be present in cacao) in fragments from cylinders or pitchers. They hypothesize that the Chacoans traded with the Mayans for their cacao cylinders and that these drinks might be used in rituals as they were in the Mayans culture. Unfortunately, it would take hundreds of years for these people to enjoy whipped cream with their chocolate drinks!
