Holy cow. Just after I posted about how awesome I thought the prospects of stem cell therapy were, comes this story of a boy that developed cancerous brain tumors as a result of treatment with fetal stem cells. Granted, his prospects for living very long without this therapy were not good. But, this finding demonstrates the need for researchers to discover how to control the newly injected cells in patients so they go where they are supposed to go and don't propagate with negative consequences. There is a stem cell cancer hypothesis that has been floating around for quite a few years that this case seems to support. So sad.Sunday, February 22, 2009
